Automated Join Procedure
Updated: 11/03/2003 Version 1.00
This process automates the process of joining machines to the Campus
domain within CalNetAD.
Assumptions:
- You have pre-created the computer account in the Campus.Berkeley.Edu
domain. If not, follow the instructions for creating the computer
account here
first.
- The machine is configured to use ns1.berkeley.edu and ns2.berkeley.edu
as primary and secondary DNS servers:
ns1.berkeley.edu -> 128.32.136.9, 128.32.206.9
ns2.berkeley.edu -> 128.32.136.12, 128.32.206.12
-
The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service is started. If it is not
started, you will get the error message: "Network
Location Cannot be Reached" Error Message When You Try to Join
a Domain".
- The machine to be joined is running Windows 2000 or higher.
- The machine is a member of a workgroup (standalone), not a domain.
Before proceeding, you will need:
- To log on to the machine as local administrator
- The fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the machine to be
joined
- Your CalNetAD administrator account and password
Once you have all the information, follow the instructions below:
- Logon as local administrator of the machine to be joined to the
domain.
- Open your web browser and go to the scripts page of the CalNetAD
website:
http://calnetad.berkeley.edu/documentation/scripts/
- From this page, download the zipped file, joinDomain.zip,
and extract all files from the archive to a local directory on the
machine.
- Open the command prompt and run the script from the directory where
it was extracted to. For detailed instructions on running the script,
click on the following link: HOW
TO: Using the joinDomain.cmd script
Example:
To join a machine with a FQDN of yourmachine.ls.berkeley.edu to the
CAMPUS domain, the correct joinDomain syntax is:
joindomain mymachine.ls.berkeley.edu
campus youradminID
- After successful completion of script, reboot the machine.
- Your machine is now joined to the Campus domain.
