CalNetAD status report

Mike Blasingame introduced the newest CalNetAD staff member, Arden Pineda, to the committee.

A copy of the status report presented by Mike is available here in pdf format.

Eric Chamberlain also reported that:

  • Service Pack 3 is being tested and implementation is planned for October.

  • Okena is installed on the Domain Controllers in 'passive' mode which monitors activity levels.

  • A certificate server has been implemented in the test environment.

  • Eric is checking into the HfNetCheck software which can be used as an update server for member workstations and servers.

  • The Quest software tools will be installed and evaluated in the test environment.

Security Subcommittee report

John Ives was not able to schedule a Security Subcommittee meeting so there was no report. However, John did mention his involvement in setting-up some local SNS security mentoring sessions that will be held in October. There will be a fee to attend the sessions. Contact John for more information.

Application Server

An application server (Dell 2650) has been purchased and installed in the Evans machine room. The application server will be used to run several services within the CalNetAD forest.

CalNet Directory integration status

Karl Grose reported on the successful test of the process to integrate the CalNet iPlanet-based directory with Active Directory. A copy of Karl's handout is available here.

The integration of the two directories will result in 60,000+ user accounts being added to Active Directory. This large number of accounts will impact activities which involve browsing for user accounts. Arden presented some alternatives to browsing, such as using the built-in search functions. These alternatives are available in Directory Searching Tips.

The Committee agreed that user accounts could begin to be moved into production starting Monday, September 23, 2002.
